If you don’t think one or two “regular” people can make an impact on the world, just look at John Baur and Mark Summers, two guys who invented “Talk Like A Pirate Day”.
The story goes that in 1995 they started having fun with Pirate talk while playing racquetball. They decided in jest to make it an official “holiday” and picked September 19 because it was the birthday of Mark’s ex-wife. They practically forgot about the venture until one day several years later someone encouraged them to make a big deal about it. They sent an email to syndicated columnist Dave Barry telling him about their fun and he loved it! He wrote a column about the boys and history was made.
Ah, the power of the Internet!
