September is the birthday of one of the world’s greatest explorers, Henry Hudson. In the time of John Smith, Pocahontas and Jamestown, he was given the arduous task of finding a passage to the Pacific Ocean through North America. On the way he discovered what is now known as the Hudson Bay. Unfortunately he was stranded by ice in northern New York. When the ice cleared in the spring of 1611, he planned to continue exploring. However, his crew wanted to return home. They mutinied in June 1611, setting Hudson, his teenage son John, and seven crewmen loyal to Hudson adrift in a small open boat. The castaways were provided with no food, water or weapons and were meant to die. Hudson was never seen again, although some claim that he successfully made his way as far south as the Ottawa River.
