Back in the day when an artist was someone who worked in art (and was not a famous singer) an unlikely woman became an international celebrity. Born Anna Mary Robertson on September 7, 1860, Grandma Moses rose to the height of the folk art world in the 1940s. She taught herself how to paint when she was 76 years old because arthritis made it too hard for her to continue with her needlework.
Grandma Moses was not afraid to promote herself and after her work was discovered by collectors she toured and gave talks. Her painting depict typical rural scenes in bold colors. She died in 1961 at the age of 101 in her home state of New York.
